The internationally chosen theme for 2019 World Suicide Prevention Day is Working Together to Prevent Suicide, which highlights the most essential ingredient for effective global suicide prevention: Collaboration.
On World Suicide Prevention Day, Roses in the Ocean will host local service providers and community members in the Queen Street Mall as we come together to share stories and insights, raise awareness and build capacity. Join us for live music performances, interactive play and lively discussions.
When: Tuesday 10 September Time: 10am – 2pm
The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds.
2017 saw an increase in the number of deaths by suicide in Australia, with 3,128 people having taken their own lives that year; people who were our loved ones, colleagues and peers. In addition to these deaths, there is a much larger number of people each year who attempt suicide, many of whom go unreported.
Each death, and every attempt, has a devastating impact within families, communities, workplaces and beyond. Take a minute to think about the far reaching impact of suicide being felt throughout our country and consider how we can work together to help prevent this happening to you or someone close to you.
Host a World Suicide Prevention Day event in your local community to raise awareness, improve understanding about suicide, help start critical conversations and connect your community members with local help and service providers. Community events that link people with local help services can save lives.
We have created a complete event host kit for you to use.
