About

Australia’s national lived experience of suicide organisation, Roses in the Ocean exists to save lives and to reduce emotional distress and pain.

Welcome to Roses in the Ocean, we’re glad you’re here.

Founded in 2011, Roses in the Ocean is Australia’s national lived experience of suicide organisation. Over the last decade, we have developed best practice in lived experience engagement, integration and partnership.

Cited by the World Health Organisation as a global leader in the field of lived experience of suicide, Roses in the Ocean has drawn from our own lived experience of suicide, and that of all the people we have had the privilege of walking alongside. We acknowledge the shoulders of those on which we stand who came before us and strive everyday to imagine, innovate and build the path on which we walk together.

We know that individuals with a lived experience of suicide – those who have experienced suicidal thoughts, survived a suicide attempt, supported a loved one through suicidal crisis or been bereaved by suicide – are best placed to inform, influence and lead suicide prevention activities in their local communities, workplaces and at all levels of government.

At the core of our work are people with a lived experience of suicide – offering a suite of training for those just starting to find their voice as well as others who are looking to further develop their expertise. We act as a connector of people with lived experience to a wide range of projects, initiatives and research. Other activities include working with diverse communities to better recognise and respond to suicide working.

Roses in the Ocean collaborates with individuals and organisations across community, corporate, health and government sectors to effectively and meaningfully engage lived experience of suicide expertise with all aspects of suicide prevention. Driving system reform, co-designing innovative services, delivering non-clinical peer led services, and affecting cultural change are key focuses as we strive to continuously contribute to best practice and a growing evidence base.

Roses in the Ocean receives core funding from the Commonwealth Government through the National Suicide Prevention Leadership and Support Program for national leadership of lived experience of suicide, as well as key project funding for innovative non-clinical alternative services.

Roses in the Ocean’s head office is in Brisbane, QLD with additional team members based in regional and metro areas throughout Australia.
