Suicide Prevention

The World Health Organisation estimates that more than 800,000 people die by suicide each year – that’s one person every 40 seconds.

2017 saw an increase in the number of deaths by suicide in Australia, with 3,128 people having taken their own lives that year; people who were our loved ones, colleagues and peers. In addition to these deaths, there is a much larger number of people each year who attempt suicide, many of whom go unreported.

Each death, and every attempt, has a devastating impact within families, communities, workplaces and beyond. Take a minute to think about the far reaching impact of suicide being felt throughout our country and consider how we can work together to help prevent this happening to you or someone close to you.

Host a local WSPD event

Host a World Suicide Prevention Day event in your local community to raise awareness, improve understanding about suicide, help start critical conversations and connect your community members with local help and service providers.  Community events that link people with local help services can save lives.

We have created a complete event host kit for you to use.

Host a Workplace WSPD event

Creating a supportive and mentally healthy environment for your staff is incredibly important.  This begins with awareness and genuine understanding of mental health, wellbeing and suicide, and how it can impact anyone and any business.

Your workplace can take part in WSPD …

  • organise a ‘building foyer’ event on September 10th – display WSPD banners, hand out roses and our wellbeing brochures.
  • Host a WSPD Morning Tea
  • Invite one of our trained speakers to visit your workplace
